TÜV Certification for EV charging cables: What it means and why it matters
If you’ve seen the TÜV mark on an EV charging cable and wondered what it means, you’re not alone. It’s one of the most respected certification marks in the world, but it’s not always well understood.
Unlike UKCA or CE, TÜV certification is voluntary. A manufacturer doesn’t need it to sell a cable in the UK. The fact that they’ve gone and got it tells you something about how seriously they take their product.
Here’s what TÜV certification involves and why it’s worth looking for when you buy a Type 2 cable.
What is TÜV?
TÜV stands for Technischer Überwachungsverein, which translates to Technical Inspection Association. It’s a German organisation with over 145 years of history in safety testing.
There are two main bodies you’ll encounter: TÜV Rheinland and TÜV SÜD. Both are independent, globally recognised, and accredited to test and certify products across dozens of industries.
TÜV Rheinland was the first organisation in the world to issue an industry-recognised certification for EV charging cables, back in 2011. They’ve been testing EV equipment since the industry’s earliest days.
When you see the TÜV mark on a cable, it means a sample of that product was sent to a TÜV laboratory, tested independently, and found to meet or exceed the relevant safety standards.
What does TÜV test on an EV cable?
TÜV testing for EV charging cables covers far more than the minimum requirements for UKCA or CE compliance. The testing programme is comprehensive.

The cable is tested to IEC 62893, the international standard for EV charging cables covering construction, dimensions, and performance under harsh conditions.
Connectors are tested to IEC 62196, which governs the Type 2 connector design, pin layout, and the 10,000 mating cycle requirement.
The European cable construction standard EN 50620 also applies, covering sheath material requirements including the use of TPU.
How TÜV differs from UKCA and CE
UKCA and CE are legal requirements. A cable cannot be sold in the UK or EU without one or the other. They confirm that a product meets the minimum safety standards set by law.
TÜV goes further. It’s an independent, voluntary certification carried out by a third-party laboratory with no commercial interest in the product passing.
A manufacturer applying for UKCA or CE can self-declare conformity for most electrical products. They test their own product and sign a Declaration of Conformity.
TÜV certification cannot be self-declared. The testing is carried out entirely by TÜV engineers in TÜV laboratories. The manufacturer has no influence over the outcome.
On top of the initial testing, TÜV conducts ongoing production monitoring. They visit the manufacturing facility at regular intervals to verify that current production matches the tested sample.
If production quality drops, the TÜV mark can be withdrawn. It’s not a one-off stamp. It’s a continuous commitment.
Verifying a TÜV certificate
TÜV Rheinland operates an online database called Certipedia where you can search for certified products and verify their status.
If a cable claims to carry the TÜV mark, you can check it. Enter the manufacturer or product name into Certipedia and confirm the certificate is active.
A cable with a genuine, verifiable TÜV certificate listed on Certipedia has been independently tested and is subject to ongoing production oversight. That’s a level of assurance most certifications don’t provide.
Why it matters when buying a cable
Not all EV charging cables on the market are equal. Cheaper cables sold on marketplace platforms have been found to fail basic safety tests, as Electrical Safety First reported in 2023.
TÜV certification is one of the clearest signals that a cable has been built properly and tested independently. It tells you the manufacturer invested in third-party verification and agreed to ongoing scrutiny.
When comparing two cables at a similar price point, the one with TÜV certification has been held to a higher standard. It’s as straightforward as that.
